Frequently asked questions

Are the rules free?

Yes. The legal page explains it in more detail, but the rules and supporting material for Down Range are available for any use so long as you credit the original Down Range work, don't try to make money off of it, and share what you come up with under the same terms if you make it public.

How do I get the miniature files for 3D printing?

I'm working on a solution to distribute these in a way that's accessible, easy, and doesn't cost an excessive amount to host the model files. If you've already reached out about this, I have you on an email list and will send an email your way when I release the models.

Note that the models are recommended but absolutely not required to play, and you can easily use other miniatures, poker chips, shell casings, etc. as tokens.

I want to make and sell kits for Down Range; how do I do that?

Reach out via the contact form.

How do I request a particular vehicle, troop type, or rules mechanic?

A: Please feel free to reach out with the contact form. I can't guarantee that your request will be successful, as demand for new units is high right now and I'm prioritizing based on the time I have available and which requests seem to be the most pressing and/or frequently made.

Why is [insert unit here] underpowered/overpowered?

Down Range is intended to be fast-paced, abstract, and focusing on broad tactics, not ultra-specific tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Accordingly, the differences between different vehicle variants, specific individual weapons, etc. are largely abstracted away to allow players to focus on overall themes.

The rules are constructed to allow for easy modification; just pick the unit closest to what you want and modify from there.

Why do you not have [insert military branch / country here]?

The units I'm including in making this are based on the demand I get from various organizations and individuals. Usually this is some flavor of their preferred forces to play as and their preferred adversary forces to wargame.

In most cases, you can easily use the existing units as a base to modify from.

Where can I share a unit/model I've come up with?

Reach out via the contact form and I'll be happy to evaluate it for inclusion.

I want to use Down Range for training and education, but the people I'm working with don't speak English. Are translated versions available?

Unfortunately not currently. If you would like to translate Down Range, please reach out via the contact form and I'll be happy to work with you to make that translation.

I'm also currently working on pictogram-only version of the Quick Start rules for use as a training aid with audiences whose language doesn't have a translated rule set or for whom literacy rates are low.

Why are there differences between the printable PDF rules and the online rules?

Some of the content in the printed rules is condensed to fit in a reasonable number of pages, or is rearranged to flow better when read continuously.

If you come across material that's different in terms of game mechanics, please reach out via the contact form with a description of the difference so I can fix this.

Why are there units in the online references that don't have a corresponding PDF for download?

The PDF files are provided as self-contained references for the most common reference material people request. If you would like a custom PDF containing a specific selection of units, please reach out.

Why are my country's forces depicted with hostile icons/red colors and unflattering commentary?

Why are my country's forces depicted with friendly icons/blue colors, but they still have unflattering commentary?

In the grand tradition of informal military discussion throughout history, Down Range includes a fair amount of self-deprecating humor and good-natured ribbing of friends everywhere. This should be taken as cheerful banter and not a serious insult.
