Although one might be mistaken for assuming that Marine snipers are simply the evolution of most Marines' enthusiasm for putting holes, preferably large ones, in their enemies, the true purpose of these dedicated marksmen is to act as the eyes and ears of a Marine force and allow even more potent weaponry to be brought to bear from afar.

That said, the capability to put holes in people and things is a well-practiced secondary skill set for Marine snipers, and the newest M40A6 bolt-action rifle allows for disturbing accuracy at range.

Marine snipers are often deployed in at least pairs of two, a sniper and a spotter.
